Job Purpose

To develop and lead a strategic communications and development plan for Read to Them that advances our mission, strengthens the organization, and builds our support base.

Summary

The Director of Communications and Development will be responsible for planning, managing and executing the organization’s internal and external communications, to include communications with donors, partners, schools and school systems, families, and the general public.  S/he will create a consistent, cohesive brand identity for Read to Them and ensure compliance to brand standards across all communications, with the goal of expanding target-audience awareness of the services of RTT and attracting schools and families to utilize our services.  Development activities include creating fundraising strategies / plans and actively executing those plans, in concert with the Executive Director.

 

S/He will collaborate as needed with the Operations and Programs teams to achieve excellence in the client user experience from initial website inquiry through delivery of program resources.

 

The Director of Communications and Development is accountable for public perception of RTT.  Managing this perception involves developing marketing and communications strategies, understanding the importance of timing and setting, overseeing a diverse marketing team and ensuring that all information released is consistent with the strategy at large.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

 

  • Manages marketing and development support staff, currently includes: 1 full time  marketing manager and 2 graphic design contractors, as well as a part time development assistant.

  • Oversees the daily workflow of direct reports.

  • Provides constructive and timely feedback and performance evaluations to direct reports.

 

Responsibilities

Oversight and participation in the creation, development, and adherence to the Read to Them brand across all communications channels, including but not limited to:

 

  • Collaborates with executive leadership to help develop and execute a strategic plan.

  • Develops and implements a communications strategy that builds and maintains a positive brand for the organization.

  • Oversees the development and maintenance of the RTT website including methods to deliver message, ease of navigation, and clarity of information; ensures that all content is current and relevant.

  • Oversees appropriate use of messaging and organizational tone across all social  platforms such as LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.  Participates in the creation of a social media strategic plan and calendar.   Oversees and monitors execution.

  • Assists executive leadership and outreach team in developing presentations, speeches, news releases and other important messaging.

  • Monitor / track all media coverage of RTT and our programs.

  • Creates and manages the organization’s communications calendar, including timely email blasts, newsletter / newsfeed content, social media posts, and donor communications.

  • Oversees the artistic and digital graphic content of both digital and print materials, including marketing messages, newsletters, electronic and printed materials for schools.

  • Work closely with the Programs Department to ensure all program materials are in compliance with RTT brand guidelines.

  • Plans and oversees creation of the organization’s annual report, with input from the Operations Department.

  • Expands the existing annual fund program to broaden and deepen donor commitment.

  • Works closely with the Executive Director to optimize donations and grants from individuals, foundations, corporations, service organizations, special events and any other source of philanthropy that may benefit the schools served by RTT.

  • Initiate fundraising efforts that diversify RTT funding sources.

  • Attend and engage with the community at outreach events.

  • Develop, compose, distribute, and implement policies to enhance the efficiency of the communications department and to further develop and maintain a positive organizational brand.
