Our books are categorized into four audiences. Explore the descriptions below to find the audience that aligns best with your school community.

Elementary: All Grades titles serve as the foundation of our Read to Them programs. Books in this category fill a necessary sweet spot. Some are a little longer and more thematically complex and some contain material that may be sensitive to younger readers. These titles can be read aloud to students from Kindergarten through fifth grade.

Elementary: Trends Younger titles are generally shorter in length and contain simpler plots and themes. While the content is simpler, these books are rich, rewarding, and worthwhile for elementary school families to enjoy together. They’re a great choice for schools launching a schoolwide reading program for the first time or for schools with primarily younger students.

Elementary: Trends Older titles bridge the worlds of elementary and middle school. These books are generally longer, more complex, and give students and families opportunities to engage in deeper conversations. They have the flexibility to be read by K-5 elementary school populations or just shared with upper elementary and middle school students.

Middle School titles are curated specifically for middle school students. These books are longer, with plots, characters, and themes that are more sophisticated and nuanced. By selecting a Middle School title, you can engage your students with questions, topics, and experiences that will resonate with these dynamic learners.

Questions about our Books?

Below you’ll find answers to the questions we get asked the most frequently about the Read to Them book list. If you have any other questions, please reach out to us at programs@readtothem.org.

Read to Them wants books that are engaging, accessible, enriching, and inspiring. Read to Them looks for books that are well-written and can be understood and enjoyed by a broad audience of student readers and their families. We seek books with strong characters, captivating plots, and stimulating themes written in memorable prose (or poetry). We want to find books that will spark valuable conversations across a school community.

Read to Them’s books are selected by a committee of experienced educators – librarians, reading specialists, classroom teachers, administrators – spread around the country. The committee meets and reviews titles year round, carefully considering and assessing how specific content will play in home and school environments. When the committee identifies and collectively confirms titles that match RTT’s goals they are approved and become featured RTT selections.

Titles containing content we know may be (or has been) sensitive for some communities are marked with asterisks. You will find the sensitive content banner on the left side of an individual book page, and can click for a PDF with specific sensitive content warnings to decide if that title is appropriate for your school.

It is the responsibility of each school or district to become familiar with ALL content in their selected title. Please read the book in its entirety before you purchase to ensure it is appropriate for your program.

We are proud of the array of characters, themes, and styles offered by our curated titles – but we cannot be responsible for variations in interpretation across all school districts and communities that come together around one book. School personnel are much closer to their own communities and are best positioned to make informed decisions regarding their respective family literacy selections.

Our team is prepared to inform and advise schools about potentially sensitive topics or themes in each title on our list. If you have questions about a particular title, please email us at programs@readtothem.org

A Picture Book Companion is an add-on that can expand the reach of your school-wide reading program when the chapter book might contain themes that are too complex for younger readers, especially your preschoolers. Now everyone can be included! This book even comes with its own set of resources similar to those for the chapter book. You can request to include the Picture Book Companion on the Request A Quote page when requesting a quote on one the chapter books below.  Picture Book Companions often have an up-charge that will be communicated to you on your quote.

Currently, we have six titles that have Picture Book Companions:

Some titles in our catalog have a slight upcharge for one or more of the following reasons: the title is a premium selection, the title is only available in hardcover, or the title is in Spanish.
